A near-shore phytoplankton bloom in Belgian waters

10 May 2017

Recently, Quinten Vanhellemont presented very interesting HIGHROC results at the VLIZ Marine Scientists Day 2017 (Brugge, 2017/03/03). From Sentinel-2/MSI data, he showed the presence of an intense phytoplankton bloom in front of Oostend, in Belgian waters. Due to the narrow bloom’s extent and the shallow water depth, it would be nearly impossible to detect or sample it using ship-borne measurements. This work demonstrates that Sentinel-2 will contribute to the understanding of small scale phytoplankton dynamics and sediment transport in the coastal zone.
